- TSR Download & Windows
-
- TSR Download is now compatible with Windows 3.1. You can run TSR Download
- under Windows as a DOS application. (Not as a Windows application.) When
- TSR Download is configured for Windows it examines the Windows environment
- and automatically assigns the same soft font ID numbers that Windows uses.
-
-
- CONFIGURING TSR DOWNLOAD FOR WINDOWS
-
- To use TSR Download under Windows you must first configure the program for
- your system. This configuration is described in detail in the TSRDL.DOC
- file. One additional item has been added to the standard configuration
- menu displayed by the DLCFG program. To use TSR Download with Windows you
- must answer this new question with a "Y". (The program comes configured
- with this value set to "N".) The third line from the bottom on the con-
- figuration menu shown by DLCFG will read:
-
- Use With Windows 3.1 (Y/N): N
-
- Just change the "N" to a "Y", and save the modified version. (Hopefully,
- you also changed everything else to match your system.) TSR Download is
- now set in its Windows compatible mode. You must also run SETCOLOR to
- establish the colors you want to use.
-
- TSR Download takes a while to locate soft fonts the first time it is
- installed and activated. This can be quite annoying under Windows. You can
- have TSR Download save this internal soft font "catalog" and thus save
- considerable time in starting the program. (Note that once you save a
- "catalog" you can *not* change the colors of TSR Download.) To locate and
- save a font catalog just run TSR Download from the command line as shown:
-
- dl -c
-
- TSR Download will pop up and scan for your soft fonts. Once these fonts
- are located you can save the "catalog" of fonts. Once TSR Download
- locates all your soft fonts hit the "Z" key. You will be asked for the
- name of the file to save this soft font information in. Enter "MASTER"
- followed by a return. This tells TSR Download to save the current font
- "catalog". You can then use this catalog instead of searching for fonts.
- (Note that if you add or subtract fonts from your subdirectories you will
- have to repeat this process and create a new catalog. You can now start
- TSR Download instantly by typing:
-
- dl /master -c
-
- TSR Download should pop up and only take a second to locate all your soft
- fonts. It should not hunt through your disk again for fonts.
-
-
- INSTALLING TSR DOWNLOAD UNDER WINDOWS
-
- Once TSR Download is configured you need to run a new program WINDINST.
- This program examines the Windows environment and builds up a list of the
- soft font ID numbers that Windows wants to use. To run this program you
- need to know the drive and path that your Windows 3.1 environment is
- installed in (typically c:\win) and the printer port that your DeskJet is
- attached to. Then type:
-
- windinst c:\win lpt1
-
- Where the two arguments are the drive and path for Windows and the printer
- port you are attached to. The first argument passed to WINDINST is the
- directory and path that your Windows program is in. The second argument
- is the printer port (LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, COM1, COM2, or COM3). Note that any
- time you add soft fonts to your Windows environment you will have to repeat
- this step.
-
- Once you have run WINDINST you are ready to start Windows. Switch to your
- Windows subdirectory and run Windows. You will now create a PIF file for
- TSR Download, install TSR Download in Windows as a DOS application, and
- change the icon for TSR Download.
-
- From Windows switch to the Accessories menu. Start the PIF editor. There
- are four items to change here. Find an modify each entry as shown:
-
- Program Filename: c:\fonts\dl.exe
- Window Title: TSR Download
- Optional Parameters: /master -c
-
- Video: x Text
-
- For the "Program Filename" you need to give Windows the complete drive,
- path, and program name for TSR Download. If you used the defaults in the
- INSTALL program, TSR Download in in c:\fonts\dl.exe. The rest of the items
- must be entered as shown.
-
- While still in the PIF editor click on File, and click Save As. It should
- show c:\fonts\dl.pif. Click OK and exit the PIF editor.
-
- Now switch Windows back to your Main menu. Click on File, New, OK. For the
- Description enter: "TSR Download". For the Command Line enter:
- c:\fonts\dl.exe. Then click OK.
-
- Now click on File again, then Properties, then Change Icon. For the icon
- name enter: DL.ICO, click ok, ok.
-
- You should be at the Main menu and TSR Download should be showing with its
- own icon. To test things double click on TSR Download. The program will
- appear and run. To leave TSR Download (with the program still active) hit
- the Alt-Esc keys together. Hit the Alt-Esc keys again and TSR Download will
- appear as a DOS box at the bottom left hand corner of your screen. Double
- click on this box to restart TSR Download. To completely exit TSR Download,
- just use the normal Escape key instead of Alt-Esc.
-
-
- USING TSR DOWNLOAD UNDER WINDOWS
-
- Once TSR Download is installed under Windows it is quite easy to use. Start
- Windows and activate TSR Download by double clicking on its icon. Leave TSR
- Download by hitting the Alt-Esc keys. Start your application program. Once
- your application is running hit the Alt-Esc key twice to bring the DOS box
- up in the lower left hand corner of your screen. To download fonts, just
- use the mouse to double click on this box. Send whatever fonts you want and
- return to your application by hitting the Alt-Esc key. When finished, exit
- from your application and then click on TSR Download. Exit from TSR Download
- with the normal Escape key. Then exit Windows.
